Water advisory canceled for Hawk Acres neighborhood

From the city:

Residents of the Hawk Acres neighborhood northeast of Lacey no longer need to boil their drinking water. Water quality samples show the water is safe to drink.

Marvin Road Water Co., which owns the water system, issued a boil-water advisory Tuesday morning after a six-inch pipe ruptured. Anytime water pressure is lost, contaminants can find their way into the system. The pipe break did not appear to be weather-related.

The water system serves 131 homes in the Hawks Prairie area. Customers who have questions about their water may call 360-491-1920.

Officials hope to reopen the park in mid-February.

Despite power outage, Lacey students head back to class

LACEY, Wash. -- A school-wide power outage wasn't enough to keep a group of Lacey children from getting an education on Wednesday.

Last week's historic snow and ice storm and the widespread power outages that followed kept local students from class for the past five days.

Despite still being in the dark on Wednesday, the North Thurston School District decided to hold classes at Olympic View Elementary School.

Adapting to the situation, teacher Sara Boedigheimer changed her lesson plan to have her second graders write about the power outage at their school.

"We took a little field trip through the hallways and listened and looked and used our imaginations and wrote a story about our day with the power outage," Boedigheimer said.

Safety teams roamed the dark hallways with emergency lights and a rented heater helped keep the temperature in the 60s.

Strong wind partially knocked out the school's power overnight, and then the electricity went completely offline on Wednesday. But by that time, the the day was already underway.

The district called parents and gave them the option of whether or not to have their students attend.

Video: Timelapse of PSE crews staging in Lacey

Love 'em or hate them, PSE is who many count on to restore power after terrible storms. Here's a timelapse video PSE put together from South Sound Center Mall in Lacey.

PSE hopes to have outages restored by Thursday

A Puget Sound Energy spokesman says the utility hopes to have most of the out-of-service customers back on line Wednesday with no more than scattered outages remaining Thursday.

By Tuesday afternoon it still had about 22,000 to go, mostly in the south Puget Sound region.

Spokesman Roger Thompson 280 line crews are working their way through neighborhoods in south King, Pierce and Thurston counties, making repairs that sometime restore only one or two customers at a time.

Last week's snow and ice storms knocked out nearly 400,000 customers or more than a third of PSE's 1.1 million electrical customers in Western Washington.

Thompson says, "This has been a monster."
